Learn the art of bamboo fan making from a master bamboo craftsman, Yoshimi Ishiyama, from Kyoto, Japan in this hands-on workshop. Learn the history and beauty of bamboo craftsmanship, and how to apply traditional techniques combined with contemporary design to create your own uchiwa, a bamboo paddle fan to take home.

Meet Your Instructor

Yoshimi Ishiyama was born in 1985 in Chiba. She learned bamboo craftwork at the Traditional Arts School of Kyoto and then entered Nagaoka meichiku Co., Ltd.  after her graduation. She worked there for 7 years and received Level 2 Bamboo Crafts Technician certification from the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry. In 2014, after returning to her home town,she studied under a traditional craftsman of Boshu uchiwa, a traditional craft. While training, she opened her own launch of Takekobo: Takeboshi. Currentry, she is a freelance and produces various bamboo products such as Boshu uchiwam bamboo fence construction, and New Year’s decorations.
