The tradition of handmade soft brushes has been a unique tool used for calligraphy and sumi-e painting through many dynasties unit the present day. The origins of brush making can be traced back to five thousand years ago in China. The brush is one of the most inspiring tools and still has the power to pique our imaginations. Using any type of hair, palm tree fibers, bamboo, and driftwood, you can make your own brushes by learning simple construction techniques in this workshop.
Students will make a basic size brush with bristles approximately 1” in length.

- $20 (cash payable to the instructor)
- Materials provided: The instructor will supply all of the main materials to make your brush; wood, glue, bristles (animal hair), and string.
- Materials you should bring: Scissors and a plastic shoebox for transporting your completed brush.
- Participants please bring an apron and/or wear old clothes.

Meet Your Instructor
Instructor Ying Zhou is a Chinese brush painting and Japanese sumi-e artist. She has been successful in teaching and developing the skills of a broad spectrum of students ranging from beginning to advanced levels. Ying has lectured and demonstrated her artistries in many different regions. She also enjoys brush making and pottery.
