Calligraphy & Sumi-e with Artist Masumi Sakagami

Guest Artist Adult Workshops

                 

Learn about the intricacies and beauty of Japanese calligraphy and sumi-ink painting techniques with master calligrapher and artist Masumi Sakagami. Students will learn the history of calligraphy, the basics of how to write a Japanese kanji character with the correct strokes, and to draw a bamboo with the brush and ink, two traditional writing tools. The workshop will culminate in a special gallery walk and talk with the artist at her exhibition featured in the Kohnken Gallery. Learn about the inspiration and creative process behind her work with this master artist.

Meet Your Instructor

Masumi Sakagami is a classically trained Japanese master calligrapher and contemporary artist from Nara, Japan. Her calligraphy journey began at the age of seven and has continued for the past 50 years. She graduated from Nara University with a special degree in Calligraphy Education. After graduating she went on to become a high school calligraphy teacher, a position she held for twenty years. Over the years she has received many awards for her calligraphy and her works have been featured in exhibitions all around Japan. Ten years ago, she began her career as a contemporary artist. She has held solo art exhibitions at the Kita Museum in Nara, the Kawata Gallery in Kobe, and Gallery Q in Ginza, Tokyo. Her solo exhibitions in the United States include the Walter Wickiser Gallery in Chelsea, PS122 gallery in New York City, and the Hammond Museum in Westchester County, New York.
