Katsushika Hokusai (ย 31 October 1760ย โ 10 May 1849), known simply asย Hokusai, was a Japaneseย ukiyo-eย artist of theย Edo period, active as a painter andย printmaker.ย He is best known for theย woodblock printย seriesย Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, which includes the iconic printย The Great Wave off Kanagawa. Hokusai was instrumental in developingย ukiyo-eย from a style ofย portraitureย largely focused onย courtesansย and actors into a much broader style of art that focused on landscapes, plants, and animals. His works are thought to have had a significant influence onย Vincent van Goghย andย Claude Monetย during the wave ofย Japonismeย that spread across Europe in the late 19th century.
