What is Awa Shijira Weaving?
During the time of Lord Hachisuka, the former feudal lord of Awa, it was strictly forbidden for ordinary commoners to use silk fabric, so common people devised various ways to make cotton fabrics look beautiful. It is said that “Awa Shijira weaving” was invented by a weaver called “Kaifu Hana” from Awa-Ataku Village at the time of the Meiji Restoration, who was inspired by the unevenness of cloth that had shrunk after being soaked in rain. It is characterized by the unique texture created by utilizing the difference in tension of the warp threads. In 1978, “Awa Masaai Shijira weaving”, which uses Awa indigo, was designated as a national traditional craft by the Minister of International Trade and Industry.
The carefully woven fabric is boiled in 75℃ water and then dried, revealing vivid grain patterns. The unevenness of the grain makes it smooth and light to the touch. Because it is made of cotton, it is highly absorbent and ideal for summer clothing.
