Koto is a traditional Japanese stringed instrument first introduced to Japan from China in the 7th-8th centuries. Learn the fascinating history of this exquisite instrument and how to play it in this one-day introductory workshop. Instruments will be provided for participants to use in the workshop. Learn brush strokes using sumi (charcoal) ink and a brush to write Japanese characters. After practicing on paper you will create a final calligraphy piece on shikishi board to take home. Just bring your curiosity!
This workshop introduces participants to the history and practice of taiko drumming. Participants are taught how to understand sounds and movements, i.e., how to connect nature and the meaning of body movement. They will become familiar with the way of taiko and its drumming techniques.
Origami (paper folding) has become an international word! It is used in a large variety of ways: artistic, functional, and fun. This workshop focuses on “practical origami” that is useful in your daily life, such as envelopes, boxes with a lid, candy boxes, a nameplate, etc. Add some creative fun and color into items you use in your everyday life! Instructor Reiko Nishioka is the former Morikami Director of Education and has spent many years as an Origami enthusiast.
