A Japanese wind chime, known as aย furinย (้ขจ้ˆด, literally โ€œwind bellโ€) in Japanese, is a small bell usually found hanging from the balconies and porches of Japanese houses in summer. Most Japanese wind chimes consist of three parts: the bowl or bell-shaped exterior, known as theย gaiken, the bell clapper,ย zetsu, and arguably the most characteristic of theย furin, theย tanzaku, strips of colorful paper that hangs and flutters in the summer breeze. As the wind catches theย tanzaku, it causes the clapper to chime. Not only does this create a visual representation of the blowing wind, but the gentle ringing sound has also become associated with a cool, refreshing feeling.

Thisย furinย is made from cast iron andย features a lantern with a smaller bell attached underneath.

Total length with paper attached approx. 29โ€ณ. Lantern: 5.5โ€ณ diam. x 3โ€ณ h. Bell: 1-1/2โ€ณ diam. x 1-1/2โ€ณh.

Made in Japan.
