Butoh Dance Workshop

Adult Workshop

Butoh is not only a dance form, but a way of life, a way of exploring the depths of human experience.” – Kazuo Ohno

Butoh is a type of Japanese dance theater that emerged in 1959 and over the years grew beyond Japan became a global dance phenomenon in the contemporary art world.

Pınar Sinka’s Butoh workshop brings together the choreographic method of Tatsumi Hijikata and the improvisation-based approach of Kazuo Ohno, offering participants the opportunity to experience the Butoh body. In addition to practical work, the program includes a theoretical framework addressing the philosophy, methodology, and aesthetic ideals of Butoh.

Through Butoh’s katas (forms) and image-embodiment and transformation practices, participants create new and original bodily movements while attuning to the rhythm of music and their hearts. Exercises designed to cultivate Qi, combined with slow, meditative, breath-focused improvisational practices, provide an opportunity to approach inner experiences from a new perspective.

Throughout this process, participants witness the emergence of embodied memory, subconscious emotions, and tacit knowledge held within the body. Butoh invites a deep connection with sensations, dreams and memories, encouraging their expression through movement. Thus, in Sinka’s workshop, participants not only develop an original dance language but also experience a profound somatic integration of mind and body.
