Maneki Neko (Lucky Cat) Mug

“Maneki” means “beckoning” and “Neko” means “cat” in English.

In Japan, the lucky cat is the most popular decoration found at the entrances of houses and in store windows. Many Japanese love to have them as mascots, to bring good fortune, to invite happiness and to bring prosperity to businesses.

The white cat is valued as the one that invites happiness. The golden cat brings riches and the black cat is the one that gets rid of bad luck. The one raising its left paw invites customers to a business and the right paw raised invites prosperity, good luck and wealth. Sometimes both paws are raised. It is commonly believed the higher the raised paw, the greater the luck. Consequently, over the years Maneki Neko’s paw has tended to appear ever higher.

This mug is sure to bring good luck. It features pictures of a wide assortment of colors and styles of Maneki Neko found in Japan with left and right paws raised.
