In 1914, Japanese pearl farmers began culturing freshwater pearls using mussels native to Lake Biwa. This lake, the largest in Japan, lies near the city of Kyoto. This resulted in the name Biwa pearl and at one time, it was nearly synonymous with freshwater pearls.
This pendant features four biwa pearls and one round cultured pearl, arranged in a design reminiscent of Zen stacking stones. Set in .950 sterling silver. Designed by Charles Albert.
