Learn about the traditional techniques of stone carving demonstrated by master craftsman, Takaaki Saida a fifth generation stone smith from Japan. Students will get the chance to learn the techniques of carving a decoration on a stone lantern or Jizo statue. Saida will lead the participants through the Morikami gardens and discuss the featured stone sculptures, focusing on their history, the nature of stone, and the correct way to situate those sculptural stones in a garden, such as a stone lantern.

MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR

Takaaki Saida is a fifth generation stone smith who preserves his family tradition that has been passed down for generations. He uses classic stone-smith techniques and additionally collaborates with modern architects and artists in various fields. Saida is the owner of Saida Sekizai and is a certified Traditional Craftsman in Traditional Stone-masonry in Japan.
