A vivid, visceral Macbeth adaptation, Throne of Blood, directed by Akira Kurosawa, sets Shakespeare’s definitive tale of ambition and duplicity in a ghostly, fog-enshrouded landscape in feudal Japan. Returning to their lord’s castle, samurai warriors Washizu (Toshirô Mifune) and Miki (Minoru Chiaki) are waylaid by a spirit who predicts their futures. When the first part of the spirit’s prophecy comes true, Washizu’s scheming wife, Asaji (Isuzu Yamada), presses him to speed up the rest of the spirit’s prophecy by murdering his lord and usurping his place. Throne of Blood fuses classical Western tragedy with formal elements taken from Noh theater to create an unforgettable cinematic experience.

Meet the Speaker
Born and raised in South Florida, Katharine Labuda is a preservationist & educator who has worked in the archives and libraries world for over 15 years. In her current role as a Special Collections Librarian with the Miami-Dade Public Library System, she manages the 16mm Film Collection, and archival materials in the Helen Muir Florida Collection. She also develops and facilitates programs designed to engage the public with historical materials and provide access to the unique collections held at the library. Through her AV CLUB series, she brings curated screenings of 16mm films from the library’s collection out to different libraries, museums, and clubs, and she connects with local filmmakers, curators, and journalists to act as guest hosts. In June of 2024, the Miami New Times named AV CLUB Best Film series of the year.
