Meet the Director
Matt Tyrnauer is an award-winning director, writer, and journalist known for acclaimed documentaries exploring iconic figures and cultural moments. His notable films include the Academy Award-shortlisted documentary feature, “Valentino: The Last Emperor”; the Emmy-nominated series “Victoria’s Secret: Angels and Demons”, uncovering the empire’s controversial backstory; “Where’s My Roy Cohn?”, about the powerful Svengali behind Joseph McCarthy and Donald Trump; “Studio 54”, chronicling the famed nightclub’s cultural impact; “Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood”, revealing hidden stories of pre-Stonewall Hollywood; and “Citizen Jane: Battle for the City”, about legendary urban activist Jane Jacobs.
Tyrnauer’s most recent films, documentaries on renowned chef Nobu Matsuhisa and political strategist James Carville, premiered at the Telluride Film Festival, with the Carville film subsequently acquired by CNN Films. Other recent work includes “The Reagans”, a four-part Showtime documentary examining Ronald and Nancy Reagan’s political legacy and its ongoing societal effects, and “Home”, a documentary series for Apple exploring innovative living spaces. As a journalist, Tyrnauer has served as editor-at-large and special correspondent for Vanity Fair, with additional work featured in publications such as GQ, The New York Times, Architectural Digest, L’Uomo Vogue, and Numéro.
