This roof tile (yanegawara) depicts a black demon (oni) with a closed mouth. Tiles like this originally straddled the ridge of a roof above one of the gable-ends; a companion piece (1987.015.005) similar in appearance probably occupied a like position on the other side of the roof’s end.
