Love is in the air this Valentine’s Day at Morikami. From a lovely garden stroll to a bite of mochi for two, we’re sure you’ll have a Valentine’s Day to remember with us. Read on for more on how we’re celebrating!
At the Museum Store
The Morikami Museum Store always strives to find treasures that will delight all of our guests, and this Valentine’s Day weekend is no different. Stop by the store’s Valentine’s Day display to find the perfect gift at any price point. Once you’ve found just the thing for that special someone, the Museum Store staff will be happy to give your gift some Valentine’s Day flair. If you’re here on Saturday the 14th you’re in for an extra special shopping experience. Saturday only, receive a FREE mirrored keepsake box with every purchase of $25 or more, AND enter to win a KJK pearl necklace ($100 value, no purchase necessary, you do not need to be present to win).
We’ll also be hosting a Trunk Show by KJK Jewelry, and CEO Katherine Kornblau will be on hand from 11am-4pm on Saturday. Expanding on a lifelong love of global art and culture, Katherine spent time in Lima, Peru, Guadalajara, Mexico and studied at the Ecole de Louvre in Paris while completing her Art History degree at Oberlin College. Her international education and interests are reflected in her designs and are ever popular with museums and art galleries both nationally and internationally – you can see her work here.
In the Museum
If you’re looking for a taste of culture this Valentine’s Day weekend, look no further. Join us for a sip of green tea and a sweet as we present a traditional tea ceremony demonstration in the Seishin-an Tea House. Tea Ceremony demonstrations are $5 with paid museum admission, and are first-come, first-served. This highly choreographed ceremony offers a serene feeling of spiritual discipline, harmony and tranquility, and is offered at 1pm, 2pm and 3pm.
And don’t forget to take a peek at our newest exhibitions – Poetry in Clay: The Art of Ōtagaki Rengetsu and the second installment of our very popular exhibition Japanese Design for the Senses. Explore beautiful objects including ceramics, and furniture as well as stunning examples of the work of one of Japan’s most famous female artists – Ōtagaki Rengetsu.
If your special someone is a nature lover, take a stroll through Roji-en: Garden of the Drops of Dew. Learn about the history of Japanese gardening and our six, distinct historical gardens with our mobile guided tour, or just take in the sights of splashing koi and the sounds of clacking bamboo. Roji-en offers beautiful views and lush ambiance that’s perfect for a stroll with your sweetheart.
At the Cafe
The newly renovated Cornell Cafe offers your favorite pan-Asian dishes served on our open-air Wisdom Ring Terrace. Take in views of Morikami Lake while you split some mochi ice cream, or a glass of refreshing iced green tea.
For the Kids
If you’re planning on bringing the little ones we’ve got a special treat at the Yamato-kan. Education staff will be on-site for our special Valentine’s Family Fun project – an origami heart bookmark! Learn how to make this simple origami shape, then explore Japan Through the Eyes of a Child, our interactive exhibit featuring a street of shops, a Japanese train station, a Japanese home and more!
We hope you choose to spend your Valentine’s Day right here with us and no matter what, we hope it’s a lovely one!
