This iconic local festival is inspired by Japan’s traditional three-day Obon holiday honoring ancestors and will include a breathtaking lantern floating ceremony, taiko drum performances, fireworks display, Japanese folk-dancing and more. In addition, Morikami’s lively street celebration, the ennichi street fair, will feature games and crafts for people of all ages, traditional Japanese street festival foods and shopping. Visitors can also enjoy the Kirin Beer Garden and Sake Station. In keeping with the traditional Obon celebration, guests will have the opportunity to purchase paper lanterns to personalize with special messages to honor and remember their loved ones. When night falls, visitors will pay homage to those who have passed on as the lanterns are lit with candles and set afloat across Morikami Lake.

ONE VOLUNTEER SHIFT – 3:15 pm – 8:00 pm
ALL Volunteers will need to check in no later than 3:15 pm to receive instructions. Because of the length of the shift, breaks will be given throughout the day. All festival activities will conclude after spectacular fireworks and the floating of the lanterns at 8:00 pm. Please remember this is an outside festival, at night there may be bugs and/or rain and it will get dark before the lanterns are floated. Please dress appropriately and bring bug spray if needed.
*A complimentary volunteer meal and snacks will be provided. As a courtesy, and as an additional thank you, VOLUNTEERS ONLY will be able to purchase half-priced food tickets at volunteer check-in and later at Food & Beverages Sales Tent #2. These food tickets are valid with the festival food vendors or at the museum’s Cornell Café (day of the festival only). Purchasing these tickets will save you money and time waiting in the food ticket purchase line.
Request a volunteer post: Positions will be filled on a first come first served basis. Please note: most positions are located outside.
