The collection of Marilynn Alsdorf is known internationally for the extraordinary breadth of its holdings which include important works of art from many of the world’s cultural traditions. This exhibition traces the development of Japanese painting techniques and styles with 30 works of art mounted as hanging scrolls, including early Buddhist paintings and works by such luminaries as Sesson, Hon’ami Koetsu and Tawaraya Sotatsu, Kano Tan’yu, Hakuin Ekaku, Yosa Buson, Maruyama Okyo, Sakai Hoitsu, Shibata Zeshin and more.
