Origami Extravaganza & Palm Beach Library’s Families Reading Together Kickoff Event

Free admission for children presenting a valid library card from any library in Palm Beach County and one accompanying adult.

In partnership with the Palm Beach County Library System, The Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens will be hosting the 13th annual “Families Reading Together” initiative kick-off! Alongside the fun events with the library, we will also have an Origami Extravaganza in conjunction with our exhibit, Above the Fold: New Expressions in Origami. The event will include an array of origami-themed and creative activities for all ages!

All-Day Events

Kuniko RED (resized for web)Storytelling and Magic with Kuniko Yamamoto 
11:00am, 1:00pm, and 3:00pm. Morikami Theater
Welcome to the infinite world of origami! In Japanese, ori- means “to fold” and –gami means “paper.” Using origami, music and audience participation, storyteller Kuniko Yamamoto provides a magical entry into Japanese culture. In her show “Origami Tales,” mythological character masks and puppets, amazing flowers and a dragon – all made from origami – set the stage while Kuniko shares heartfelt stories from ancient Japan.

10:00am – 4:00pm. Library
Join us for a day to promote children’s literacy. Children in Preschool through 1st grade and their families are encouraged to read this year’s book, My Friends written and illustrated by Taro Gomi, available at any Palm Beach County Library System location. Newcomers to the Library System can register for a library card at the Bookmobile “library-on-wheels,” which will be stationed at the entrance of the museum throughout the day.

10:00am – 4:00pm. Gardens
Stroll through the gardens and discover wildlife of all kinds! Discover four folding fun stations ready for little origami hands! Be on the look out for the many live water, air, and forest animals that have made their home in the Morikami gardens!

10:00am – 3:00pm. Classroom A
Fold a simple creature and make him your own by adding fun facial features: googly eyes, jagged teeth, a teasing tongue, etc. When it’s finished, pop him on the corner of a page in your book from the Great Book Giveaway!

Other Activities

Get your own Sound Safari fan for cool fun in the gardens. Walk through the gardens and discover the world of Japanese sound effects. Fans are a $1 donation (All proceeds go towards Morikami education programs).
